Historical design explanation: The six-pointed star associated with General George Washington is sometimes referred to as the "Washington star." This star was used as a symbol of his leadership during the American Revolutionary War. Thirteen six-pointed stars (representing the thirteen original American colonies) were sewn on his headquarters flag, known as the Commander-in-Chief standard, that noted his presence on the battlefield.
