Historical designs explanation: - The "Join, or Die" political cartoon, created by Benjamin Franklin, was first published in the Pennsylvania Gazette on May 9, 1754. The cartoon depicts a snake divided into eight segments, each labeled with the initials of one of the American colonies or regions. The message was a call for unity among the colonies during the French and Indian War, using the symbolism of a fragmented snake that would die unless joined together. The image was later repurposed as a symbol of colonial unity during the American Revolutionary War, becoming one of the most famous political cartoons in American history. - The six-pointed star associated with General George Washington is sometimes referred to as the "Washington star."
